Many companies are now looking ahead at their 2022 Holiday calendars considering a number of holidays fall on a weekend.

The 2022 federal holidays in the United States are listed below.  Those in Bold fall on a weekend.

  • Saturday, January 1 – New Year’s Day
  • Monday, January 17 – Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
  • Monday, February 21 – President’s Day
  • Monday, May 30 – Memorial Day
  • Sunday, June 19 – Juneteenth (officially Juneteenth National Independence Day)
  • Monday, July 4 – Independence Day
  • Monday, September 5 – Labor Day
  • Monday, October 10 – Columbus Day (also observed as Indigenous Peoples Day)
  • Friday, November 11 – Veterans Day
  • Thursday, November 22 – Thanksgiving Day
  • Sunday, December 25 – Christmas Day
  • Sunday, January 1, 2023 – New Year’s Day

The four holidays which fall on a weekend are officially observed on the following days:

  • Friday, December 31, 2021 – New Year’s Day (observed)
  • Monday, June 20 – Juneteenth (observed)
  • Monday, December 26 – Christmas Day (observed)
  • Monday, January 2, 2023 – New Year’s Day (observed)

Government offices and banks are closed in observance of these holidays. Because the U.S. deemed these specific days as federal holidays, it encourages other businesses to do the same, so that observance of that holiday can be experienced by all.

While not required, there are many benefits to employers offering paid time off to employees on federal holidays if able. The biggest is it aids in attracting and retaining top talent.  For companies open on holidays, like healthcare or retail, planning for employees to be off in and around these holidays is vital to remain in operation.

From a workforce management standpoint, companies should notify their Time & Attendance and Payroll suppliers as to which dates need to be added to their Holiday Schedule for 2022.
